Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) Building Technology Urban Systems Division has an opening for a Building Decarbonization Program Manager to join our Whole Building Systems (WBS) team.


The Whole Building Systems department promotes the design, construction, and operation of energy-efficient low-carbon commercial and residential buildings through applied research and development, deployment strategies, and integrated, whole-building approaches. 


In this exciting role, you will support applied research, demonstration and deployment projects to accelerate the adoption of building decarbonization – energy efficiency, electrification, demand flexibility in the commercial building sector, for existing buildings retrofits as well as new construction. Areas of focus include technical assistance, technologies and strategies for deep retrofits, financing and implementation approaches.  The position responsibilities include development of workplans, project execution coordinating diverse and matrixed staff, liaising with the Department of Energy (DOE) and other sponsors, and industry stakeholder engagement.  


What You Will Do:

• Help principal investigators to develop project ideas on building decarbonization, responsive to DOE and Berkeley Lab priorities, building sector needs and opportunities. 

• Help develop project workplans, scope of work, budgets, staffing. 

• Manage project execution. Conduct technical work, coordinating staff assignments and work, track budgets and spending, internal and external project reporting. 

• Manage sub-contracts with external consultants. 

• Liaise with DOE and other sponsors at the direction of project Principal investigators.

• Develop partnerships and engage with industry stakeholders including building owners, operators, designers, builders, utilities, service providers, manufacturers, ESCOs, and others. 

• Write technical reports, case studies, and other market-facing technical resources. 

• Present at conferences and other industry forums.

• This is a full time, 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

• Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.

• The full salary range for this position is $145,092-$177,336. The budgeted salary range that the Lab reasonably expects to pay for this position is $153,148-169,268. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.

What is Required:

• Minimum 5 years of experience in building energy efficiency. 

• Bachelor’s degree in architecture/engineering/building science or a related field or equivalent education and professional experience. 

• Experience with leading partnerships across diverse stakeholders.

• Deep familiarity with energy efficiency, electrification, grid-integration and decarbonization of commercial buildings - technologies, design and delivery processes, operations. 

• Familiarity with energy efficiency programs, including utility programs.

• Familiarity with the commercial building market. 

• Familiarity with energy efficiency financing and cost-benefit analyses. 

• Networks and relationships in the building energy efficiency industry.

• Excellent networking and communication skills. 

• Strong project management and execution skills - staying on scope/schedule/budget.


Desired Qualifications:

• Masters or Ph.D. in architecture, engineering, building sciences, or a related field.

• Experience with developing and writing applied R&D proposals. 

• Expertise in building HVAC systems
