Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Administrative Technology in Harvard University Information Technology, the Director of the Enterprise Project Management Office oversees HUIT's Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO) and provides project management thought leadership across the University.

The HUIT EPMO supports large-scale business transformation and information technology projects, including those funded by the University's annual IT Capital Review Board (ITCRB) and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences' Project Review Board (PRB). Building upon the core values, vision, and mission of HUIT, the Director is responsible for ensuring a culture of partnership and accountability with project managers, including those reporting into the EPMO, others embedded in distributed project management offices in HUIT service areas or the Schools, and others hired directly to manage large-scale projects. In a typical year, the EPMO oversees a portfolio of 15-20 projects with annual total expenditures of $20-25M.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drive the vision for the HUIT Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO).
  • Provide leadership oversight for a team of 5-7 project and program managers responsible for leading Harvard's largest and most complex business transformation and IT initiatives.
  • Cultivate relationships with HUIT Service Owners and Harvard Business Owners to align project management services to project needs.
  • Lead the coordinated planning effort for the eventual replacement / migration of Harvard's enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms.
  • Establish, sustain, and continuously improve HUIT project management standards, templates, and best practices.
  • Partner with Office of Technology Strategy and Planning (OTSP) on annual project funding processes and multi-year technology planning.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative partnerships and convene cross-organizational communities of project leaders and managers; identify opportunities to align priorities for standardization, information sharing, etc.
  • Communicate complex ideas to business partners, independently and in partnership with business relationship management team and service area leads from ATS and other HUIT organizations.
  • Provide accurate, timely, comprehensive visibility into programs and projects (including overall status / performance, organizational and stakeholder value and benefits, organizational and project-based risks and issues).
  • Serve as interim project leader for emerging initiatives / projects as appropriate.
  • In partnership with project managers and HUIT finance, monitor and track project financial results, develop models for implementation and ongoing operations, and otherwise oversee project cost management.
  • Collaborate with other embedded project management offices to ensure consistency, codification of lessons learned, conformance of tools/standards, etc.

Certificates and Licenses

  • PMP, PRINCE2, Agile, or other relevant certification and experience preferred

Working Conditions

Interview and onboarding activity for this position may be conducted via telephone & Zoom video conferencing, based on the department's current presence on campus.

This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. HUIT actively supports hybrid work where business and team needs allow. Additional detail will be discussed during the interview process. Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience

  • 10+ years of experience in project management
  • 5+ years of experience in personnel management, especially of other project management professionals
  • Experience in progressively responsible roles working directly in a complex enterprise with complex decision-making structures or decentralized operations greatly desired
  • Demonstrated experience leading successful implementations of large-scale projects
  • Experience in higher education or public sector highly beneficial
  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills (writing sample will be required of all applicants) and the ability to establish good working relationships
