Director of Community Development – City of Springfield, OR

City of Springfield, OR
Springfield, Oregon
  • Payrate
    $110,016 To $154,023 Yearly

Located in the heart of the Willamette Valley, the Springfield Community is known for its breathtaking mountains, majestic trees, fantastic parks, and numerous arts and recreational activities. Situated in Lane County 110 miles south of Portland, Springfield is located between the beautiful McKenzie and Willamette rivers within an hour of both the Cascade Mountains and Oregon’s popular coast. It lies adjacent to I-5 within the Eugene-Springfield Metropolitan Area and covers 15.84 square miles with a population of more than 62,000 residents.

The City of Springfield is seeking a knowledgeable, collaborative leader with experience guiding development in a community with lofty goals and limitless potential. The right fit for this position will have experience in zoning, land use, development processes, and capital projects and understand how to develop, implement, and assess short- and long-term strategies to achieve established City objectives. Additionally, they will be a mentor and team builder who leads by example, holding themselves and others to the highest standards of performance and professorial ethics.

The ideal candidate is someone ready to make a difference, leading change and progress while balancing additional growth with the vision of City Council and the desires of Springfield residents. They should understand how to analyze internal processes to improve efficiency, prioritize staff development and mentorship, and have experience seeking win-win solutions and building consensus among a variety of stakeholders. They should also be customer-service-focused and have strong communication skills, someone who makes a broad range of audiences feel heard and understood. Past success in a mix of development and redevelopment efforts — and in navigating State legislative priorities — will serve this position well, as will experience working with elected and appointed leaders, members of the media, and an engaged resident population.

Any combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position may be considered. A typical way of acquiring them would include a bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, law, planning, engineering, or a related field and seven to 10 years of progressively responsible, relevant experience, including at least five of significant management and supervisory experience. The selected candidate should have, or be able to obtain, a valid Oregon driver’s license within 30 days of employment.

The City of Springfield is offering a starting salary of $110,016 to $154,023 for this position, depending on experience and qualifications.
