Head of Program Management

What You’ll Do:

As the Head of Program Management, you will oversee the Program Management Office (PMO) that supports Discovery Education’s Social Impact team, leading a cohort of Program Managers and Specialists who drive the strategic planning, scheduling, and flawless delivery of Corporate Education Partnerships (CEP) program deliverables.   You will lead in a player/coach role and work closely with, and be a proactive partner to, the Partner Impact Team and Creative Hubs (Video, Web, Curriculum, Marketing, and Design) to guide processes that ensure program quality, timelines, and project budgets are met to support our collective goal of exceeding partner expectations. 

Team Management 

  • Mentor and train Program Managers/Specialists to ensure optimal team dynamics and individual career growth 
  • Serve as a pivotal communication, escalation, and negotiation point to the team and management 
  • Process Management 
    1. Guide the operation, development, and improvement of team processes and SOPs necessary to support and accelerate CEP’s business growth 
    2. Collaborate with other senior department leads to maximize operational efficiencies and define processes  
    3. Nurture cross-functional relationships and be the ultimate problem solver to deliver work to clients 

Portfolio & Project Management 

As the senior lead across a portfolio of program partnerships, you will collaborate with, guide, and support the PMO team regularly on business priorities, strategy, and best practices related to the successful delivery of their individual program deliverables. In addition, as a player/coach, you will also lead individual programs.  

  • Provide strategic program/project planning and coordinated oversight on a variety of work products, including the synergistic integration of design, web development, curriculum, and video content, as well as events, etc. into cohesive client deliverables 
  • Review budgets, project plans, and SOWs with an understanding of best practices, potential third-party capabilities, time requirements, and broader portfolio business objectives 
  • Work with PMs and Team Leads to assemble the best integrated teams for each assignment 
  • Regularly assess the effectiveness of these processes, platforms, and tools - optimizing, as needed and write standard operating procedures to ensure clarity across the business 
  • Ensure all project elements/projects are delivered on-time, to a high level of quality and customer satisfaction 
  • Serve as a solution seeker when variables come to light that impact timing

You are an experienced project management and business leader with a history of excelling in your role leading cross-functional teams. You are known for being a self-starter who is passionate and experienced in all aspects of project management and have an impeccable attention to detail. You thrive in a purpose-driven environment and your experience empowers you to advise senior leaders and team members on how to develop and implement appropriate processes and operational best practices. Your experience is inclusive, but not limited to websites, digital videos, highly produced content, and other interdependent projects. You are all about hustle, flexibility, and are a strong leader up for a challenge. You get excited about partnering closely with team leaders in a variety of disciplines (Video Production, Creative Design, Curriculum Development, Web Development and Partnerships) and are motivated by the opportunity to manage, grow, and lead a team of talented Project Managers. 

You understand best-in-class processes to establish deadlines, prioritize tasks, and assign team members to various deliverables, while having the muscle to analyze financial data, including project budgets, risks, and resource allocation while contributing to the drafting of new and improving existing project management office policies and processes.

What are we looking for?

Your previous experience demonstrates your success in a leadership role guiding teams through Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling and Closing out projects on time, within budget and with desired results. 

We are looking for individuals with proven project management skills, team leadership experience, impeccably strong written and verbal skills, demonstrated ability to be highly organized and schedule driven, have a learning mindset, and are ready to work in a professional and timely business model with a keen sense of urgency to be successful.  

A Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification and familiarity with an Agile workplace preferred. 

Requirements:  

Mission-Driven: Passionate about Discovery Education's vision to transform teaching and learning, experience in education or ed-tech industry a plus 

Professional Experience: 7-10 years in a related role in which project management skills were a central component of the work.  A cool, calm, and collected approach to problem solving. Understanding the education marketplace in a plus.  

Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience required in business, marketing, communications, or another related field 

Knowledge & Skills: Seasoned project management skills as well as experience with large, multivariable product/program deliverables and the ability to collaboratively lead cross-functional teams to the successful delivery of the CEP programs, while also effectively monitoring all aspects of the project to ensure all elements of the project are always on track or to know if something is off-track how to course correctly in a timely fashion 

Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication as well as strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with many employees, an effective listener to understand the many variables associated with project management, and communicate priorities with a positive, solution-oriented mindset 

Leadership: Demonstrated experience in and passion for team leadership, mentorship, and development of talent. Strong work ethic driven by a sense of urgency, flawless organization skills, and ability to inspire others to act and fulfill Discovery Education’s mission 

Proactive Risk Management Insights:  The ability to proactively identify critical path elements and solve for potential schedule conflicts in advance to allow the project to stay on time and at or under budget.  Proactive risk management includes identifying what could potentially go wrong and providing quality options for solutions to prevent risks and mitigate effectively for risks when something does go wrong 

Collaborative: Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-energy environment. Team builder, not turf builder 

Hustle: The courage and confidence to work hard and with passion; committed to getting the job done; sustain effort in the face of adversity. Maintain consistency and focus over time with a positive “never give up” attitude

Sense of Humor: Because we all need to laugh sometimes  

Technical Skills: Proficiency in Asana or other similar project management software, proficiency in presentation design (Keynote or PowerPoint), Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook and Office Suite. Familiarity with Jira and Agile development a plus 

Flexibility:  Candidates must be willing to travel 5 - 10% of the time to meet with partners, customers, or internal meetings, as needed.
