Brief: Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), an MIT spinout pursuing the fastest, surest way to clean, limitless fusion energy, is looking for an experienced engineer with exemplary capabilities in design integration and the ability to guide system design work.

CFS’ mission is to enable world-wide clean energy for everyone, creating a sustainable environment for current and future generations. We’ve created a credible path to an operating fusion power plant in 15 years which leverages our novel collaboration with MIT and funding from strategic and financial investors who share our vision. This begins by developing a new class of high-field superconducting magnets that will enable the SPARC tokamak to demonstrate net energy from fusion for the first time. To execute this plan, we are now looking to add talented people to the team who:

  • are mission-driven and treat people well;
  • improve our team by adding diverse perspectives & new ways of solving problems;
  • have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits; and
  • have skillsets and experience that relate to the following role:

Head of System Design and Integration Engineering

The CFS System Design and Integration Engineer will be responsible for the following assignments:

  • Establish and execute the overall systems engineering framework for the SPARC tokamak, including requirements and information management, design integration, design processes, and procedures.
  • Ensure that design solutions are "fit for service", representing an optimal combination of performance, cost, quality and design/construction time.
  • Establish the design integration approach for the combined CFS/MIT team. This applies all design and construction stages to ensure activities remain on track and are communicated well.
  • Help in establishing the overall ISO-9001 quality assurance program, in a streamlined, effective program.
  • Lead the development of integrated engineering models to ensure the design meets requirements (safety, performance, reliability, etc.).
  • Develop and implement procedures and work aids for completing design work for the SPARC plant.
  • Support development of a company culture where the systems engineering program is used rigorously.
  • Establish a process to ensure work at CFS, MIT, the Architect Engineering firm, and Construction services is performed in a uniform manner.
  • Ensure change and version control is maintained for the design deliverables.
  • Serve as the main interface with outside design integration technical support.

The ideal candidate will have these attributes:

  • Minimum 10 years of related experience in complex engineering design and integration applications.
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Nuclear engineering and physics degrees are desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience in applying systems engineering in practice.
  • Experience with INCOSE (International Council on Systems Engineering) practices and methods for Systems Engineering is highly desired but not required.
  • Experience with QA programs and lead auditor certification is highly desired but not required.
  • Exceptional attention to detail is required.
  • Experience working on integrated safety models and integration tools such as engineering simulator development is considered a highly-desired attribute.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Highly skilled in setting priorities and communicating these effectively to the internal and external teams.
  • Excellent analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills.
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly, and display respect with a desire to foster teamwork.

If you share our mission and believe you are a good fit for this position, please do apply.
