Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Sciences Area has an opening for an Infrastructure Manager to join the team.

In this exciting role, the successful candidate will partner closely with the leadership teams of the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) and Materials Sciences Division (MSD), as well as coordinate with the infrastructure leads at the Advanced Light Source and the Molecular Foundry User Facilities within Energy Sciences Area (ESA)

The manager will work closely with CSD and MSD Division Leadership and Principal Investigators (PIs), and partner with Facility Area Managers (FAMs), Project and Infrastructure Management (PIM) project managers, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) staff, procurement personnel, and other relevant operations staff members to ensure that infrastructure for CSD and MSD is maintained or modified to meet the scientific needs of the respective Divisions.

The manager also supports, tracks, and provides strategic recommendations to senior leadership about the planning efforts for Area and Lab priorities including the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) and the development of plans for new buildings in the Charter Hill location, ensuring ALS-U and Charter Hill preparation needs and project impacts are included and accounted for in Area infrastructure prioritization.

What The Infrastructural Manager Will Do:
Strategic Infrastructure Management

  • In close partnership with MSD and CSD leadership, coordinate and establish operational objectives and work plans for a range of infrastructure projects, laboratory repairs and upgrades, work orders (WO), and maintenance.
  • Serve as Facilities/PIMD point of contact for CSD and MSD for new instrument installations. Partner closely with PIs and Division and Area leadership as needed on new equipment purchases and ongoing projects, including options modeling, providing strategic guidance and proactively ensuring plans and designs are feasible and achievable.
  • Support ESA management for infrastructure oversight for the Area.


General Building Management

  • Serve as, or Provide oversight of the Building Manager function for multiple buildings.
  • For all managed buildings, ensure timely and clear communications of infrastructure impacts, and access issues to all building occupants.
  • Walks buildings, checking laboratories, corridors, building storage areas, loading docks, salvage, etc. for issues and to partner with occupants.
  • Oversees the building maintenance contact for all general maintenance issues in managed buildings including HVAC, lighting, fume hoods, alarm testing, LN2 tanks, building utilities, etc.  
  • Ensures building safety and security; serves as the primary point of contact for building emergency planning and emergencies.


Property & Space Oversight for ESA office, MSD, & CSD

  • Property/assets Management Program
  • Division Space Management Program
  • May supervise and/or delegate work to support staff.


What is Required:

  • Prior experience in managing complex multidisciplinary scientific facilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading service and support teams. Provide program staff with performance expectations, guidance and training to ensure customers are provided with quality, comprehensive and effective services and deliverables.  Ability to delegate assignments to program team members.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets and schedules, developing project and initiative planning documents, and coordinating/managing project delivery, including team assignments and technical quality.
  • Experience applying analytical and problem-solving skills to complex problems. Demonstrated ability to take initiative, use sound judgment, and provide solutions to ensure results.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to establish and maintain successful relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • High level of initiative and independence.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple deliverables and competing adlines in a high demand environment, and plan and execute complex projects.
  • Experience coordinating with various types of vendors/agencies and support organizations (e.g., Facilities, Projects & Infrastructure management, Security, EH&S).
  • Familiarity with space planning, operations in a shared laboratory environment, and infrastructure requirements of research equipment.
  • Must be able to come onsite regularly, and potentially off-hours due to the nature of  strategic space planningas wekk as potential infrastructure emergencies.


Desired Qualifications:

  • 8 years or more of relevant work experience including planning, scheduling, and budgeting preferred or a combination of education and work experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience working in a research setting.
  • Advanced degree in a scientific or related field.
  • Familiarity with UC, DOE, and National Laboratory operations, procedures, and policies.
