Discover is seeking a Lead Operational Risk Management Oversight Specialist in its Corporate Risk Management, Business Risk Officer Team. The role is designed to provide the appropriate candidate with experience in a "Best in Class" risk management program. The Corporate Risk Management (CRM) team at Discover Financial Services is searching for a Lead Operational Risk Management Oversight Specialist to take a significant role in critical thinking, data analysis and reporting, risk and controls, and process improvement, while implementing programs which increase the organizations competitive advantage and enable them to make more informed decisions.

The candidate will support and enhance activities for which they are assigned while working collaboratively with management, internal business partners and peers. The position provides exposure at various levels within the organization and an opportunity for significant career development. Each day can present new challenges and a successful candidate should be able to think independently, interact with management, and drive value on a variety of initiatives, analyzing and taking ownership of the resolution of complex issues, and obtaining input from subject matter experts and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee department wide Business Unit Testing and Monitoring for required controls, including managing the testing schedule, documenting of department specific BUTM procedures, creation of Issues where appropriate and conducting Root Cause Analysis with Issue Owners.
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to business regarding all Issues and associated Action Plans. This includes but is not limited to Root Cause Analysis, Look Back Analysis, including monitoring and reporting and control mapping.
  • Maintain and enhance the risk and control library for Corporate Risk Management [CRM] as well as the department wide control self-assessment process.
  • Collaborate with the business to support the rollout, education, coordination, and training of required department wide initiatives
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to process owners and SMEs during all phases of the Control Design Review process to ensure efficient and effective risk and controls are implemented to mitigate inherent risks
  • Assist the CRM Risk Officer with duties to facilitate and ensure the departments compliance with policies and standards across Corporate Risk Management.
  • Promote a risk-aware culture, ensure efficient and effective risk and compliance management practices by adhering to required standards and processes
  • Strong ability to ensure accurate results and the execution of requested initiatives, with minimal direction
  • Strong listening skills to understand and translate requirements into appropriate formats, such as reports, graphs or presentation slides
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills as position presents to and/or interfaces with various levels of management within Corporate Risk Management.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Ability to work on and manage multiple tasks simultaneously while demonstrating leadership capability
  • Quickly adapt and take lead of other ad-hoc projects when necessary and continue to build and share knowledge and best practices.
  • This position operates in a fast-paced environment, requiring a high level of organization and analytic skills, with a strong attention to detail.

Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here's what we need from you:

  • Bachelor's Degree in IT, Risk Management, Business, Finance, Engineering, or related field
  • 2+ years of experience in Compliance, Internal Audit, Business, Risk Management, Financial Services, Process Improvement, or related field
  • In lieu of a degree, 6+ years of experience in Risk Management, Financial Services, Process Improvement, or related field
Preferred Qualifications

If we had our say, we'd also look for:

  • 4+ years of experience in Compliance, Internal Audit, Business, Risk Management, Financial Services, Process Improvement, or related field
  • In lieu of a degree, 8+ years of experience in Risk Management, Financial Services, Process Improvement, or related field
  • CRISC, CISA, CISM, CISSP, or similar certification
  • Project Management Professional
