The Category Manager, Global Travel & Meeting Services, directs Discover Financial Services' (DFS) Multi-Million-dollar Global Travel & Meeting Services Program. This encompasses a $150+ Million Global Travel program and Meetings Management contract oversight. Additional aspects of the position include continuous benchmarking of Travel & Meetings Policies, technology options to improve performance, program compliance processes, Travel & Meetings Risk Management, Travel Management Companies (TMC) services, Strategic Meetings Management (SMM) processes as well as managing a team of travel and meeting professionals. This high visibility position requires building and maintaining internal partnerships with key DFS stakeholders including Finance, Corporate A/P, Risk Management, Legal, Audit, and C-Suite.

Manages and controls Discover Financial's spend through category and supplier management best practices with the purpose of reducing total cost of ownership by leveraging effective negotiation and indirect sourcing strategies, tools and processes, and mitigates risk through contract development for category products and services acquired throughout the organization. The category manager role will be responsible for developing, advancing, and ensuring execution of the strategies for DFS, including strategic sourcing, supplier relationship management, contract management, and category spend and market analysis. Ensures all processes and actions are in compliance with company and Regulatory policies and guidelines.


  • Develops a direct relationship with key stakeholders and assists in business forecasting, planning, and implementing strategies. Works with internal clients to help them better understand Sourcing's role, processes, and procedures. Develops, maintains, executes, and updates Category Spend Strategy and works with Facilities to create projects to implement them accordingly. Facilitates strategies through RFPs, RFIs, and RFQs in accordance with the developed strategy.
  • Oversees the purchasing process from order creation through receipt of goods and services and invoice payment. Tracks team metrics on volume, processing, and approval times and drive efficiencies as needed. With the assistance of the Facilities Analytics and Chief of Staff, implements controls necessary to ensure the appropriate documentation exists that provides evidence of an accurate and low-risk process, paying particular attention to approvals and separation of duties.
  • Creates quarterly dashboards that organizes and presents data that track Category spend, contract dates, and goals and objectives (savings targets, sourcing projects, spend under management, etc.). Creates and delivers effective and tailored presentations to senior management around plans, strategies, results, and purchasing metrics.
  • Develops market data and benchmarks to stay in touch with market conditions. Analyzes spend data through reports, purchase orders and invoices, contracts, bid letters, quotes, vendor reports, and additional sources to accurately identify scope of category, total spend under/outside management unit costs and supplier-comparative analytics to drive out opportunities and adjust strategies accordingly.

Travel Department

  • Provide strategic guidance for global travel processes which improve the end-user experience while maintaining cost controls
  • Direct the TMC to ensure data collection for vendor negotiations, management of the online booking process and reporting database
  • Conduct vendor QBR's to ensure contract hurdles are maintained, including the direction of booking practices and preferred vendors
  • This position will operate as a key business partner linking Travel with other department functions including: Sales, Meetings and Events, Purchasing, Finance, internal IT functions, Audit, HR, and Safety/Security
  • This role will manage multiple projects of varying scopes concurrently, while meeting timeline milestones and quality expectations
  • Conduct regular educational presentations for all levels of staff to evangelize the global travel & meetings program
  • Manage department communication portals such as SharePoint and other key communication outlets
  • Manage compilation and distribution of data for management reports to key stakeholders
  • Conduct regular program reviews with Leadership
  • Manage corporate jet program

Strategic Meetings Management

  • Strategize direction of the SMM program working with the SMM Manager who oversees a team of 4 meeting professionals worldwide
  • Engage with Legal, Finance and Corporate Purchasing and A/P functions to ensure alignment for payment, consistent contract terms and conditions and cost containment are maintained
  • Benchmark like companies for program development
  • Evangelize program globally, conducting educational seminars to educate employees and key stakeholders on departmental strategy, cost savings, Policy and compliance directives
  • Provide guidance for hotel sourcing RFP's, F&B, A/V and other key elements of meeting and event contracting
  • Conduct surveys to develop internal employee feedback and measure program improvements

Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here's what we need from you:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Liberal Arts, or related field
  • 6+ years of experience in Sourcing, or related field
  • In lieu of a degree, 10+ years of experience in Sourcing, or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Business, Liberal Arts, or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in Sourcing, or related field, including people management
  • In lieu of a degree, 10+ years of experience in Sourcing, or related field, including people management
  • Project Management, Lean Six Sigma
  • Strong knowledge of global travel and meeting automation programs
  • Prior travel report development and distribution experience including the ability to design, build and deliver metric reports
  • GTP, CCTE, CMP, CWAS or other travel/meetings certification preferred
  • Expert-level functional knowledge of TMC's, GDS, online travel & meetings (RFP) booking tools
  • Experience in travel audit and reporting functions
  • Experience working in Strategic Meetings Management environment
  • Experience negotiating global airline contracts including JV and Alliance contracting
