Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. We are looking to establish a new Directorate to manage the execution of major capital projects related to infrastructure required to meet plutonium pit production deliverables. The Directorate is at the center of execution of capital projects in and around the LANL’s plutonium pit production facilities for U.S. nuclear weapons and is focused on sustaining the current stockpile, providing life extensions of the stockpile and helping to ensure the safety, security and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear deterrent.


As a Manager of Projects 5, you will be expected to be the lead project manager, assist in all planning and execution activities and serve as line manager for all deployed Project Managers and other functions in support of executing all phases of capital projects. You will be responsible for ensuring Integrated Safety Management (ISM) line management; leading continuous improvement for project management; overseeing all aspects of personnel management (e.g., recruiting, employee hiring and on-boarding processes); managing headcount; forecasting and budgeting; directing assignments; training; providing continuous performance management; identifying growth opportunities; and ensuring proper team recognition and appreciation. You will interface with the Senior Director as well as the functional managers to define the scope of the portfolios and develop strategies and plans to address project needs.



  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience; without a bachelor’s degree, you will need at least 20 years of related experience
  • Advanced experience managing construction projects, including proactively managing project scope, schedule and budget using Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS)
  • Demonstrated successful experience identifying potential project risks, developing risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions and recommending risk acceptance/avoidance for all aspects of a project
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience managing nuclear facility and or programmatic project work
    • Project experience with DOE O 413.3B projects or equivalent system of requirements
    • Expert knowledge and expertise in the areas of construction, engineering, procurement and other project-related activities, including their interfaces and inter-dependencies
    • Strong understanding of financial analysis and planning concepts
    • Management experience in all project management functions, including formal EVMS
    • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience in project management of technical or operational work, including developing project execution plans, work breakdown structures and work packages, managing to scope, schedule, budget and technical baselines and documenting baseline reports and change control actions
    • Advanced broad knowledge of industry standards
    • Proven leadership and management in the following areas: personnel management, customer engagement, financial and schedule management


Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity in nuclear facility operations or other highly complex, hazardous operations, particularly as they pertain to the LANL
  • Experience working with federal clients at headquarters or field office level in a strategic manner to maximize client satisfaction
  • Project Management Institute Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent
  • Active DOE Q clearance
