Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) has an immediate opportunity available for a Mechanical Systems Lead Engineer to join the Advanced Light Source-Upgrade: ALS-U Division (https://als.lbl.gov/als-u/overview/). 


The Advanced Light Source (ALS, https://als.lbl.gov/) is a Department of Energy (DOE, https://www.energy.gov/) national scientific user facility that provides thousands of scientists from around the world access to bright beams of x-rays, infrared, and extreme ultraviolet light for scientific studies and technology development in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. ALS-U is an upgrade project for the ALS that received approval of its cost, schedule, and performance baseline in April 2021. The project has a total project cost of $590 million and a project team of about 200 people. Early completion of the project is planned for fiscal year 2027. The project will transform the ALS to provide a world-leading soft x-ray light source, increasing brightness and coherent flux by more than 2 orders of magnitude. The project is rapidly approaching completion of final designs and preparing to move into the execution and construction phase. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades, and the ALS-U project will ensure the facility’s leadership in this field for decades to come. The ALS-U Mechanical Systems Lead Engineer has the responsibility for management of all Accelerator Mechanical subsystems (comprising Vacuum Systems, Magnets, Magnetic Measurements, Insertion Devices, Supports, and Pre-Staging) for the ALS-U project. Where appropriate, this includes the line management of Control Account Managers with responsibility for scope, schedule and budget for each subsystem. The position also includes a key role within the systems engineering framework of the project and shares responsibility with the ALS-U Accelerator Systems Managers for design and planning of the new storage ring, accumulator ring, transfer lines, and all associated technical systems within the scope of the ALS-U project. The position closely interfaces with the other three Accelerator Systems areas (Electrical Systems, Beam Physics, Building Systems/Utilities). This leadership position is for the duration of the ALS-U project, with responsibilities that evolve and may grow as the project advances through different project execution phases. 


The position reports to the Deputy ALS-U Accelerator Systems Manager, and participates as an active member of the ALS-U senior management team.


What You Will Do:

• Orchestrate the conclusion of remaining final design activities and execution of the Accelerator Systems Mechanical Systems scope to enhance the effective and efficient delivery of the ALS-U project. To accomplish this, the position requires close partnerships with the ALS, Engineering, ATAP, and the Berkeley Lab Operations Divisions.

• Lead the ALS-U Accelerator Mechanical Systems under the direction of the Deputy Accelerator Systems Manager, to include:

    ◦ Leading engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, assembly and pre-installation work performed by the Accelerator Mechanical Systems team.

    ◦ Supporting technical integration of mechanical sub-systems with all Accelerator Systems scope.

    ◦ Coordinating the Accelerator Mechanical Systems presentations at meetings of appropriate committees.

• Manage requirements, interfaces and risks for Mechanical Systems.

• Recruit, hire, organize, and manage mechanical systems staff.

• Manage and report on budget and schedule, including EVMS management.

• Support management of space, equipment, and facilities utilized for construction of ALS-U accelerator mechanical systems; coordinate space needs with ALS-U Deputy for Operations. 

• Work closely with the ALS-U procurement team on acquisition planning and effective execution of Accelerator Mechanical Systems procurements, including qualification of vendors and management of vendor oversight activities.

• Oversee preparations for reviews (e.g. technical reviews, Director’s Reviews, PMAB, OPA, etc.); organize technical reviews.

• Report at regular team meetings, advisory committee meetings, and other venues.

• Coordinate with ALS-U EHS lead and ALS-U management on work safety, and ensure that work performed by the mechanical systems team follows safe work practices.

• Represent the Laboratory to the outside world in engineering through, for example, participation in design reviews, workshops and conferences.

• Author or contribute to conference presentations and publications.

• Foster the professional development of supervised staff.



• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

• This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

What is Required:

• Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 15 or more years of experience (or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge).

• Experience with design, procurement/fabrication, assembly, installation and maintenance of high-technology systems (of complexity similar to accelerators).

• Demonstrated project management experience.

• Proven experience in presenting designs through design reviews and documentation.

• Ability to perform and lead effectively in a team atmosphere involving multidisciplinary personnel.

• Advanced problem-solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently solve problems and make appropriate and timely decisions.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with other engineering staff, scientific staff, external collaborators (including vendors), and higher levels of LBNL management.

• Familiarity with standard engineering tools as well as project management and tracking tools and methods.

• Experience estimating project costs and resource requirements, generating project schedules, and tracking progress to meet deadlines.

• Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills in authoring technical and scientific reports and publications.


Desired Qualifications:

• PhD in Engineering or Physics.

• Experience with particle accelerator or beamline related science or engineering.

• Experience on projects governed by DOE Order 413.3b or other projects employing similar project management rigor (e.g. earned value management systems). 

• Familiarity with particle accelerators or beamlines, including ultrahigh vacuum systems, accelerator magnets, and precision alignment.

• Established connections and reputation with the national and international community in particle accelerators and beamlines.

• Experience with systems engineering practice.

• Experience with safety culture at a major facility.

• Experience with qualification and oversight of vendors.
