About the Role

Working closely across several departments, the Project Manager is responsible for:

  • Advancing the development of educational and informational resources for industrial hygienist (IH) / occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) professionals.
  • Serving as grassroots organizer vis-a-vis our various technical committees, ensuring their interests are aligned with the association’s overarching strategic priorities.
  • Technical aspects of existing content.
  • Use of professional IH concepts to resolve complex analysis of existing, new and emerging priorities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Implements Strategic Initiatives

  • Works closely with the Senior Project Manager and volunteer groups to recognize trends and opportunities and translate them into products and services for the profession and association.
  • Maintains frequent communication with volunteer groups and evaluates opportunities for more engagement and/or streamlining of initiatives.
  • Drafts copy for the annual State of Research Report and assists in review of member developed technical documents on behalf of AIHA.

 Administers Content Portfolio Advisory Group (CPAG)

  • Ensures existing content is being reviewed and updated, coordinates with members and subject matter experts to efficiently manage the update process.
  • Advances work on new emerging priorities through cultivating a community of SMEs and engaging our membership on an exchange of ideas.
  • Coordinate content priority team calls and regularly update content priority dashboards.
  • Moderates all technical and CPAG communities on Catalyst, AIHA’s online community
  • Posts to social media channels on technical and related matters.
  • Coordinates monthly CPAG conference calls and face-to-face CPAG committee meetings.

 Manages Standards Advisory Panel (SAP)

  • Oversees its operations
  • Stays abreast of standards updates (e.g., ISO, ANSI) relevant to the association or the profession and communicates regularly internally to staff and externally to volunteer leaders as needed.

Serves as subject matter expert to drive excellence in internal staff Project Management

  • Works with the Senior Project Manager to help communicate to staff best in class project management processes and implementation.
  • Assists in the management of SmartSheet projects.


Education & Experience

  • Preference given to candidates with a background in IH or the broader occupational/environmental health and safety field.
  • A bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or an IH-related technical discipline.
  • A minimum of eight years of related experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and professionallevel experience.
  • Required:
    • At least 3 years’ experience with technical volunteer groups and volunteer management
    • At least 3 years’ experience leading project teams of volunteer and/or contracted technical (STEM) subject matter experts
    • At minimum, basic knowledge of the IH profession
    • Strong technical writing skills
    • Proven ability in using and applying sound project management techniques in managing projects
    • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft products (primarily Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Preferred:
    • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
    • Advanced degree in industrial hygiene or related field.
    • At least 2 years of previous experience in a non-profit or association, preferably managing in a scientific area.
    • At least 3 years of grassroots organizing experience.
    • Working knowledge of SmartSheet.
    • Able to work with an Association Management System (AMS).
    • Knowledge of and experience in implementing industrial hygiene related risk assessments and corrective actions.
    • Advanced experience identifying, applying, and interpreting federal codes, standards and regulations in the broad spectrum of IH.
    • Knowledge and application of techniques and procedures for industrial hygiene exposure assessments (both qualitative and quantitative), to include sampling techniques/instrumentation, analysis, and selection/implementation of controls.
    • Experience and skill in the preparation and communication of industrial hygiene technical information to technical and nontechnical personnel.
    • Knowledge and ability to apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.
    • Proficiency in interfacing with database management systems.
    • Superior interpersonal skills as demonstrated by successfully working with a wide variety of customers and team members.
