The Computing Division at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking an Information Systems Project Manager with experience and expertise in Information Technology. The Project Manager will lead projects and strategic initiatives in alignment with the SLAC IT Project Management Office (ITPMO) standards and methodology.

The Project Manager will independently manage and coordinate projects throughout the entire lifecycle, from initiation through closeout. This position reports to the ITPMO Manager.

SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park; CA. Due to COVID-19-related curtailment of on-site activities, the job duties for this position may be required to be performed from home until full site access is restored.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Take projects from original concept through final implementation on contained risk assignments (projects have mechanisms or managerial controls to minimize risk). Work is typically comprised of 50% time contribution towards project leadership and 50% as a technical contributor.
  • Perform the full range of project management cycle: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. Lead projects requiring functional integration. Complete sub-project and/or stand-alone elements.
  • Direct development of an action plan, and estimate requirements for resources, including management, labor, materials, and time required to complete project.
  • Facilitate discussions and negotiations to drive recommendation consensus within scope of responsibility.
  • Develop and help execute comprehensive change management strategy and communication plan relative to project scope and stakeholders on a focused project; actively manage resistance to change.
  • Perform preliminary business analysis and clarification of customer requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate system/software development lifecycle and project management methodologies are applied.
  • Assess and revise project plan as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.
  • Follow standard PM methodologies (waterfall, agile, etc.) and the ITPMO framework.
  • Establish milestones, deliverables & acceptance criteria. Communicate progress against the base-line.
  • Provide updates to management and key stakeholders on project performance, status, issues, and risks.
  • Manage issues related to projects and escalate as appropriate.
  • Manage project risk and quality.
  • Ensure identification and management of downstream systems integrations.
  • Assess, incorporate, and disseminate lessons learned from project outcomes.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or related field and three years of related experience in management of projects of moderate size/complexity with limited performance risk, including project planning, scheduling, tracking, and budgeting, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Polished written and oral communication skills to address a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to productively engage and influence cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated project management ability to employ integration, scope, time management, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement components.
  • Demonstrated resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem solving skills in a variety of situations.
  • Depth of knowledge in technical discipline/domain needed to deliver projects. This includes experience in the following areas:
    • In-depth technology experience in at least one technical area, (IT operations, applications development, software/hardware engineering, etc.).
    • Demonstrated experience in developing complex project/program schedules using scheduling software; MS Project preferred.
    • Demonstrated experience in project management, and successful delivery of moderately complex projects.
    • Demonstrated experience working in a customer-focused environment, ability to adapt to changing priorities and requests and provide excellent viable solutions. Customer Service Skills are critical to the success of project management and this role.
  • Ability to take calculated risks for projects and manage risk within a portfolio framework.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office, PowerPoint, Visio, and collaboration tools.

Certifications and licenses:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification required, or certification in process.
