                  Project Supervisor


SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.


Basic Function: Reporting to the Project Manager this position is responsible for supervising various Operating and Capital Projects, including the initiation, planning, execution and close out on such projects as building envelope, roofing, infrastructure, exhibit refurbishment, renovations and new construction. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan and Master Plan.




Responsibilities include design, cost estimating, drawings and specification preparation, scheduling, construction adminstration, site inspections and project close out.


Interviews, selects, trains, schedules, supervises, directs, evaluates and disciplines assigned staff. Monitors and counsels staff regarding performance and attendance.


Prepares drawings and design sketches reflecting architectural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical (including computer components), landscape and structural components. Revises siteplan, SIC (base building drawings) and Fire Plans based on project work completed.


Works with architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, government agencies and Zoo staff with respect to exhibits, site renovations and other projects.


Reviews architectural and engineering drawings and specifications and provides feedback to the architect or engineer accordingly. Reviews shop drawings.


Prepares tender documents (drawings, specifications & Request For Quote/Tender/Proposal) according to Branch standards. Coordinates site meetings with contractors to review the project and receive quotes. Reviews tender submissions for award of project work.


Prepares detailed cost estimates for planned projects for budget and construction implementation purposes.


Organizes and undertakes on-going construction site inspections at project locations. Responsible for conformance and quality assurance.


Oversees contractor’s work during project implementation to ensure that all work is being completed in accordance with the contract documents (drawings & specifications).  


Prepares reports and undertakes investigation/analysis for project work as needed.


Maintains records for all assigned projects, including drawings, specifications, Autocad library, materials and methods, as built drawings, product information, warranties, etc.


Attends various Toronto Zoo meetings to update staff on project status.


Responsible for ensuring compliance with WHMIS legislation, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Toronto Zoo Safety Policies, ensuring all contractors and employees work in a safe manner, with the appropriate protective equipment and that all accidents and hazards within the area of responsibility are promptly investigated and corrective action taken.


Assists guests onsite as required and ensures excellent customer service is provided by Zoo staff.


Performs other related duties as requested by the Manager.




Must possess a post secondary degree/diploma in Architecture or Engineering from a recognized institution or equivalent amount of training and experience.


Must have a minimum three (3) years practical and technical experience in architectural/engineering and construction related work, three (3) years of which are at the supervisory level an asset.


Previous experience supervising in an unionized environment preferred.


Must have considerable knowledge and experience with drafting using Autocad and Revit. Experience with Microsoft Office (especially Microsoft Project) and Outlook is also required.


Must be experienced in interpreting architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and landscape drawings.


Must possess sound knowledge of project management, office procedures, construction methods and planning and related procedures.


Must possess thorough knowledge of scheduling, Microsoft Project (or equivalent) and contractor relations.


Must have a proven ability to supervise construction and perform contract administration duties.


Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and possess good presentation skills.


Must have a working knowledge of the WHMIS Legislation, Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, Construction Act and Ontario Regulations Regarding Construction Projects as they apply to repairs, renovations, and new construction, facilities, site services and landscape.


Must be willing and able to work weekend and holidays.
