Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) Engineering Division has an opening for a Risk Manager to join the team in support of the ALS-U and other projects at the Lab.


ALS-U is an upgrade project that received approval of its cost, schedule and performance baseline in April 2021, with a total project cost of $590 million. Early completion of the project is planned for fiscal year 2027. The project will transform the Advanced Light Source, which is a Department of Energy (DOE) user facility serving over 2,000 national and international users every year. ALS-U will provide a world-leading soft x-ray light source using a multi-bend-achromat lattice and increase brightness and coherent flux by more than 2 orders of magnitude compared to the current ALS. 


In this exciting role, you will provide leadership and technical expertise to plan, develop and administer technical project risk management functions and to ensure timely and effective identification, management and handling of project risk.  To support the Laboratory’s risk management framework, which includes facilitating risk discussions, maintaining current, accurate and complete risk information, and analyzing and trending risks and issues data to gauge risk management performance.


What You Will Do:

• Develop and implement risk assessment protocols, guidelines, processes and assessment tools. 

• Produce risk reports and other risk-related communications for senior management decision-making purposes.

• Ensure timely and effective identification, assessment, and handling of project risks for assigned projects. 

• Provide guidance in the development of project baseline plans, schedules and resource needs to address and mitigate identified risks.

• Perform integrated schedule and cost risk analysis using risk databases and risk analysis software.

• Interface with other organizations (technical teams, project management teams, project controls, etc.) to ensure risk analysis results are accurate and realistic.

• Support the maintenance and execution of a comprehensive risk database for risk tracking and reporting.

• Perform integrated schedule and cost risk analysis using risk databases and risk analysis software.

• Monte Carlo impact modeling, as well as comparative assessment of model outcomes against expected value outcomes with inclusion of high likelihood impact ranges.

• Assist senior staff with risk elicitation and the production of risk results to support risk informed decision making.

• Perform written monthly performance reporting and communicate results to senior management.

• Support project reviews, special projects, analysis, or studies as requested.

• Develop and facilitate risk management training classes.

• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

What is Required:

• B.A./B.S. or advanced degree in a related field or discipline (e.g., risk management, quality assurance, engineering) with 8+ years of risk management work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, academic training and experience.

• Knowledge of the integrated application of risk assessment techniques, risk models, statistical analysis, risk elicitation, Monte Carlo modeling, and scheduling tools.

• Demonstrated ability and experience providing technical guidance to a variety of staff members.

• Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to develop and maintain collaborative, constructive and cohesive working relationships with key internal and external contacts.

• Familiarity with Primavera P6/Risk Analysis software, Cobra cost management system .

• Ability to develop and clear and concise presentations, briefings and reports containing programmatic and technical data to various levels and diverse audiences. 

• Ability in dealing with sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy, and respect.


Desired Qualifications:

• Experience working in Government Owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) research and development environment.

• Experience implementing programs in a Department of Energy contractor organization.

• Understanding of DOE 413.3 directives.

• Proficient with Cobra cost management system, Primavera P6/Risk Analysis software.
