Job Summary:The Senior Business Systems Analyst (Senior BSA) works alongside a dynamic and innovative team of analysts, developers, and quality assurance professionals, offering expertise in the delivery and operations of custom applications supporting the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, particularly in the areas of human resources and payroll administration for staff, faculty, and student workers. The Senior BSA will be responsible for translating business requirements into functional solution designs, engaging with stakeholders, and working independently on deliverables and projects. The ideal candidate must demonstrate keen problem-solving ability, independence, collaboration skills, and communication/presentation skills.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Research, prioritize, design, document, implement, configure, and validate solutions to users' business needs, at times working on multiple projects simultaneously. This includes:
- leading meetings with key stakeholders and end-users
- creating user stories and business requirements documentation
- working with quality assurance analysts to create and execute test plans
- verifying that developed functionality matches user stories, system specifications, and security requirements
- creating and presenting training and other materials, and writing and distributing end-user communications
- establishing and monitoring project plan deadlines
- identifying and communicating project risks to the management team
- Partner with team members to ensure support issues are identified and resolved, provide operational support as needed, and analyze and research report requests.
- Participate in team-wide Agile practices including sprint planning, backlog refinement, retrospectives, and daily standups.
- Perform other related job duties as needed.
Typical Core Duties:
- Work at an expert level within a team on most phases of service analysis and consider the business implications of technology applications to the current and future business environment
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into systems requirements and scoping
- Define systems requirements, conduct gap analysis, and identify feasible alternative solutions that meet defined business objectives
- Responsible for business transition management to ensure that systems are understood by users
- Contribute to budget planning
- Contribute to the development of plans and policies for a unit/school
- Advise unit/school
- Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum of five years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience

- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Excellent relationship-building skills, service mindset approach, and ability to act as a trusted advisor
- Meeting facilitation and presentation skills; comfort presenting to a variety of audiences
- Direct experience with business analysis tools and techniques
- Proven experience with relational databases including SQL
- Solid understanding and demonstrated use of iterative development (preferably Agile)
- Advanced desktop application skills such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio
- Superb organizational skills, especially with the ability to manage and track a large number of details and facts and understand how each detail fits into the "big picture"
- Adept at evaluating problems accurately and displaying sound judgment, including measured risks and timely escalation
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, particularly with respect to new systems and processes
Certificates and Licenses
- Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred
Working ConditionsInterview and onboarding activity for this position may be conducted via telephone & Zoom video conferencing, based on the department's current presence on campus.

For those interested in remote work this position can be performed remotely. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA).
Travel to campus may be necessary based on business needs and the nature of work. Examples include bi-annual or quarterly Town Halls, critical business meetings or other work events. Additional detail will be discussed during the interview process.
