Reporting to the Manager, Project and Portfolio Management in Library Technology Services, the Senior IT Project Manager is a member of a cross-functional team of trusted advisors, project managers, Agile facilitators, business and technical analysts, quality assurance professionals, and user experience and design experts. The team stewards a diverse portfolio of library technology services through effective outreach and collaboration with Harvard Library and other stakeholders at the University and beyond. Our focus is on delivery of world-class solutions to fulfill the core objectives of the Harvard Library: To advance scholarship and teaching through the collection, creation, application, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge.

The Senior IT PM will plan, conduct, and supervise the completion of complex information technology projects benefiting the Harvard Library and relating to other University IT priorities, and may manage several projects simultaneously. These projects require high levels of functional integration and involve multiple disciplines to be managed. The person in this role is expected to quickly demonstrate familiarity with academic library and archives priorities and workflows.

The person in this role will:
  • Effectively bridge technical and non-technical communities, so that project goals, timelines, and deliverables are clearly understood by all
  • Develop project plans, document key business requirements, and facilitate decision making amongst a wide variety of stakeholder groups
  • Assemble project teams, identify appropriate resources, and assign individual responsibilities based upon project needs, timelines, and complexity
  • Develop and adapt project schedules to budgetary and design constraints and ensure timely project completion
  • Leverage steering and executive committees and other governance vehicles for decision-making, change management, and communications
  • Make decisions and solve problems using sound reasoning and judgment within a framework of business and stakeholder priorities
  • Assess business implications of projects by conducting risk assessment and other analyses
  • Play a key role in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, primarily those in the Harvard Library
  • Develop content for discussions in project meetings and document outcomes
  • Provide timely project status updates and other communications to Harvard Library, HUIT, LTS, and project stakeholders
  • Participate in and support an affinity group of project managers and Agile facilitators to foster the sharing of best practices and promote strong project management standards in LTS
  • Advise Harvard Library colleagues regarding post-project operations
  • Apply Harvard University's IT technical standards and best practices
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT Code of Conduct

Certificates and Licenses
  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy Project Management Foundations course (or external equivalent) preferred
  • PMP or other relevant certification and experience preferred, e.g., Scrum Master
Working Conditions

Interview and onboarding activity for this position may be conducted via telephone & Zoom video conferencing, based on the department's current presence on campus.

This position will be a hybrid role with the option to work on campus or remotely as often as desired, with the expectation of attending in-person meeting and collaborative sessions when the opportunity presents itself. HUIT actively supports hybrid work where business and team needs allow. Additional detail will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT).

Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following Additional Qualifications are strongly preferred. If you meet some, but not all, you are still encouraged to apply; we value employees with a willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated cross-functional project management experience for technology projects in academic or research libraries or archives preferred
  • Knowledge of IT applications, processes, software, and equipment
  • Knowledge of advanced IT project management principles (e.g. Agile), processes, and tools desired
  • Proficiency with presentation and collaboration tools
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without direct responsibility/control
  • Strong consulting skills and adeptness at breaking down barriers to collaboration and partnership
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
  • Change management experience across a large set of diverse stakeholder groups of similar scope and size as Harvard's Experience at Harvard or in a complex higher education institution desirable
