Oversees and manages the activities of design and engineering professionals and contractors in the planning, programming, design and construction of projects for the University of Utah. Frequently consults with customers regarding project status and changes and assists in preparing recommendations and requests. Ensures that projects are progressing on schedule and within budget. Responsible for building projects from inception to completion, ensuring that projects are built to University and State standards, local and national building codes, and departmental requirements.

COMPENSATION: 75900 to 148100

WORK SCHEDULE: Full Time. 40 hours/week

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages and coordinates the planning, design, and construction of capital facilities projects; Acts as a liaison between customers, departments, agencies, other organizations, professional service providers, and contractors; Coordinates with and/or supervises professional services consultants in the performance of contracted responsibilities; Instructs, guides, and counsels clients regarding the processes of project development, procurement of services, and all other aspects of project implementation; Assures that client needs are addressed and construction documents are prepared within the constraints of policies, procedures and business practices of the University and the State of Utah; Reviews construction proposals, contracts and plans, determines project requirements, oversees compliance with requirements, and recommends corrections of deficiencies and approves all changes; Negotiates contracts and proposals on behalf of the customer and the University; Monitors and manages project budgets and schedules to assure completion of critical tasks needed to meet client timing objectives; Approves pay requests for consultants, vendors, and contractors for completed work; Compiles information for submission to the Board of Trustees and the State of Utah Division of Facilities Construction Management, for review, approval, and funding; Assists with other department needs as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, a related field, or equivalency; AND 10 or more years of related experience; Familiarity with State and national building codes and experience working on capital development project, and; Demonstrated human relation and effective written and verbal communication skills are required.

PREFERENCES:

The exceptional candidate will possess the following:

• Experience as an Owner’s Representative/Sr. Project Manager that includes multiple buildings and facilities.

• 5 years management experience in planning, design and construction of large projects with capital budgets above $10M

• In-depth knowledge and understanding of university operations, administration, community, and mission.

• Proven leadership skills that include work with complex organizations on large commercial projects.

• Clear communicator with a strong grasp of political and organizational dynamics.

• Financial skills to prepare, monitor, and manage complex detailed project budgets, evaluate independent cost estimates. and review and approve payment requests.

• Working knowledge and understanding of Lean principles and practices construction techniques.
• Working knowledge of Plangrid and/or Autodesk Build

• Working knowledge of typical design and construction sequences and durations necessary to prepare, monitor, and manage detailed overall project schedules. Ability to interpret and understand Primavera P6 schedules is a bonus.
• Demonstrated resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem-solving skills in a variety of situations.

• Keen grasp of interpersonal and impact awareness.
• Depth of knowledge in technical discipline/domain needed to deliver projects.
