The Illinois Applied Research Institute (ARI) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking applicants for a Software Project Manager position. The Software Project Manager will work with software project leads to manage software projects from start to finish, providing scheduling, tracking, oversight, and documentation. In addition, this position will support close collaboration and communication among and between project leads, software engineers, and other project team members.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with software project leads to manage software projects from start to finish, including project work estimation and scheduling; task tracking; overseeing software testing, evaluation, and troubleshooting; project milestone and status tracking and reporting; and project documentation.
  • Provide close collaboration and communication with project leads and coordinate, support, and motivate software engineers and other team members in the execution of external and internal software projects. This includes being part of the ARI software engineering team in meetings/communication with current and potential sponsors and collaborators.
  • Manage software and data repositories and work collaboratively with project teams to develop documentation and reports for software projects, including tracking of change requests, support, and updates as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree.
  • A total of two (2) years (24 months) in education, training and/or work experience in software project management.
  • Demonstrated experience in project planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and change management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a range of programming languages and/or project management methodologies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and familiarity with software engineering, through work experience as a software engineer, education in software engineering, and/or software engineering project management experience or education.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply software management methodologies and tools, including project estimation techniques.
  • Demonstrated understanding of software engineering processes and project lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with security and data protection practices.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for code reuse (including design for reuse) and building efficiencies across projects.
  • Ability to stay informed about evolving industry practices for code implementation and documentation.
  • Commitment to safeguard industrial, vendor, product, and operational information, as well as comply with independent software vendor, industrial, and university legal requirements.
  • Ability to manage information coming from multiple sources and to manage multiple software projects concurrently.
  • Knowledge of and ability to manage internal software, data, and model repositories.
  • Ability to assemble teams that leverage the diverse set of expertise and experiences of the ARI staff, matching skills to project requirements.
  • Ability to ensure that project results are documented, archived, and reported through contract-mandated processes.
  • Ability to interact and collaborate constructively with principal investigators and supporting staff.
  • Ability to facilitate effective communications between technical and non-technical project stakeholders.
  • When appropriate, ability to track investigator activity related to preparation and submission of journal articles/ conference papers.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication, and listening skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
  • Familiarity with Clickup as a general project management tool.
  • Familiarity with open-source software licensing, including academic institutional processes surrounding creation and use of open-source codes.
  • Ability to assemble collaboratively and make presentations to a variety of stakeholders and collaborators.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, FERPA, PHI, and other data protection regulations.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time Civil Service 5002 Program Coordinator position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
