Berkeley Lab’s Energy Sciences Network (ESnet, https://www.es.net/), the fastest science network in the world, is seeking an experienced Technical Project Manager who combines extensive project management and organizational skills with analytical, process development, communications, and project leadership experience. 


As a Technical Project Manager, you will lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects to support the innovative next-generation network as well as the current network. In collaboration with leadership and network engineers, plan requirements and activities with internal team members and customers to guide projects through the entire project lifecycle. This includes managing project schedules, identifying risks and communicating goals to project stakeholders. The projects often span multiple teams, and it will be your role to keep all the stakeholders coordinated on the project's progress and deadlines.  You will also work closely with our vendors to manage their deliverables and hold them to committed deadlines.  



• Lead and deliver large networking infrastructure projects coordinating across internal teams and external service providers.

• Define project requirements, budgets and timelines, working closely with organizational and technical leadership. Manage all aspects of the project and reporting including schedules, milestones, cost estimates, risk, contingency plans, etc.

• Plan, coordinate, and facilitate internal and Department of Energy Reviews in coordination with project leadership. Responsible for preparation of project management related review artifacts and documentation.

• Work with the senior management team to design and launch new processes, institute process improvements, and ensure the efficient achievement of process objectives.

• Develop and organize reports to track scope, schedule, budget, issues, risks, and overall status. Coordinate with stakeholders to manage, track, and control project issues to ensure timely delivery. Create effective reports to communicate with staff, collaborators and external funding agencies.

• Create and deliver presentations on project goals, status, and plans that are tailored for diverse audiences. Audiences will include ESnet staff, Berkeley Lab PMO, Environment, Health and Safety, Department of Energy, Office of Science program managers and Computing Sciences Area leadership.

• May supervise support staff. Develop staffing plans and participate in the selection of project team members.


What is Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field with a proven track record of delivering IT  infrastructure projects in a computing data center or large network, including 5 or more years of experience managing moderate to large, complex technology infrastructure projects from inception to completion, OR equivalent combination of experience and education.

• Experience managing service providers and/or equipment vendors 

• Ability to independently formulate, organize, document, and present ideas in an effective manner.

• Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions consistent with organizational goals, policies and procedures. Sound judgment and ability to take decisive action without all desired information. 

• Demonstrated experience interacting effectively with personnel at all levels of the organization and presenting complex technical project deliverables to management and external agencies.

• Proven ability to develop, nurture and influence relationships across diverse organizations.  

• Experience with and use of industry recognized project management software.


Desired Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, or Network related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.

• Experience implementing and/or supporting WANs or LANs. Experience in network engineering.

• Familiarity with DOE Office of Science research programs, and/or Research and Education networking communities in the US or abroad.

• PMP Certification.

• This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
