Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for project management and leadership for a portfolio of domestic and international energy transitions projects. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring successful execution of project work within the time and funding budgets; forming, managing, and providing technical direction to project teams; maintaining client relationships; and identifying strategic opportunities for project growth. The candidate is responsible for helping to develop solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and innovation and a deep understanding of energy transition challenges at the state, local, and international levels.


The successful candidate will have strong leadership, research, and communication skills (writing, speaking, and listening). Prior education, coursework, or experience in economics, energy policy, regulation, planning or implementation; energy transitions; decarbonization; sustainability; resilience; energy-water-food systems; and/or climate mitigation. In addition, the successful candidate will be adept at translating research into digestible summaries for the non-expert. Exceptional teaming, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills as well as the ability to work independently and problem solve are also required.


Job Duties

The successful candidate will work with minimal oversight to lead and support domestic and international projects and tasks at NREL that include analysis, interpretation and engagement using cross-sector data to inform energy transition decisions. The candidate:

  • Leads and manages several concurrent projects or tasks that focus on developing and connecting technical data, tools, and analytic resources to inform energy transition decisions. Specific tasks may include:

  • Interaction with internal and external clients, representatives from domestic and international governments, and other stakeholders.

  • Public and private sector stakeholder engagement and coordination for input on projects and for the dissemination of project outcomes.

  • Project management functions such as initial scope development, research, execution, budget tracking, project controls, communication of findings, and leveraging results for new project opportunities.

  • Leading smaller project teams of internal and external subject matter experts.

  • Applying technical knowledge of energy technologies, markets, and policy in the U.S. and internationally.

  • Understanding decision making and integration of technical solutions into real world applications.

  • Representing the work of technical project teams and presenting findings in public forums at webinars, conferences, etc. 

  • Provide excellent customer service to different clients and diplomatically manage project prioritization, researching staff availability, and cost-effectiveness. Clearly communicate the achievements, challenges, and future directions of work products to project funders.   

  • Support the pursuit of research or project funding opportunities through different business development approaches including competitive proposal development, expansion of current work assignments and securing new client’s engagements.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices and standards. Full knowledge of technical field and related disciplines. Very good interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of technical field and related disciplines (e.g., clean energy policy, sustainability, resilience, decarbonization)

  • Master’s degree in energy policy, environmental studies, sustainability, or equivalent technical discipline.

  • Understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices, and standards.

  • Demonstrated experience managing or contributing to programs/projects in domestic and international contexts.

  • Demonstrated experience working directly with clients to understand their needs, translate needs into analytic projects, and successfully execute on those projects.

  • Exceptional writing, presentation, and communication skills. Demonstrated experience engaging stakeholders and communicating results of work to a wide range of audiences including technical and non-technical.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.

  • Excels at working within a team environment.
